In Christopher Columbus’s time, the Canary Islands were believed to mark the end of the world. After being conquered by the Spanish in the 15th Century, the Canaries become a popular stopping point for explorers, traders and missionaries on their way to the Americas.

The islands have also appeared earlier in Greek and Roman times and were written about in texts and affectionately named the “happy islands” and “fortunate islands”. It is no surprise that the fantasy city of Atlantis has also been theorized to lie amongst the sub-tropical islands making up the archipelago. Suffering some tumultuous times in the past few centuries, the Canaries now enjoy the protection of Spain while remaining an autonomous community with a thriving tourist industry.

Nowadays the Canaries are best known for being a popular tourist destination especially for Europeans. In fact, tourism makes up 32% of the economy which is hardly a revelation considering the islands’ mild sunny climate that it enjoys all year round, with temperatures rarely falling below 18C in winter or above 24C in summer. The climate is regulated by the warm Gulf Stream and Trade Winds making any time of year good for a visit.

The seven islands that make up the archipelago offer visitors a range of activities, scenery and lifestyles that can live up to any vacationer’s desire. The lively islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria at the centre of the island chain host some wild resorts teeming with beach activities and night life. Many people choose to stay here for the social scene but the islands also offer plenty of options for taking a break from the partying to enjoy some of the island’s natural beauty.

If nature rather than nightlife is what appeals to you, there are plenty of other islands to explore. La Palma is considered the most beautiful and untouched of the islands and has its own microclimate. Visitors to the island seek its lush, green rainforest-like atmosphere but often don’t realize that this foliage is a result of the higher levels of rainfall it receives! Designated a national reserve in 1974 and subsequently recognised as a globally protected site by UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) Lansarote’s Timanfay Park should not be missed by those seeking fantastic volcanic island landscapes including black sand beaches and fields of petrified lava.

The island Fuerteventura boasts the longest beaches of the Canaries and is most popular for family holidays or couples seeking a tranquil holiday away from it all. Cheap flights to Fuerteventura and the other islands are easy to find in advance or on the fly.

Whether you are looking for all night raves and foam parties or a quiet holiday in gorgeous surroundings, the Canary Islands can deliver. Choices amongst the seven islands abound and the close proximity to the UK and plentiful flights available make the islands an ideal destination for a short getaway or a longer visit.

Smallville has grown from just an adaptation of Clark Kent ‘s life as a young man to a real pre-Superman era series. In fact, they’ve built it up so much that the show has incorporated more than a few DC Comics characters such as The Green Arrow, The Flash, Aquaman, Cyborg and Martian Manhunter. Most recently, another classic DC Comics character has come into the show, and this time it’s Black Canary, who will be debuting in the February 7 episode of Smallville entitled “Siren.” In the original comics, Black Canary is an ass-kicking member of the Birds of Prey and the love interest of Green Arrow. She also has a high powered sonic scream that can shatter objects and incapacitate villains. The CW recently released photos of Smallville’s version of the femme fatale.

Before that though, let’s examine the original Black Canary from the DC Comics. The original Black Canary sports long blonde hair with bangs, and is dressed in a turtleneck, skintight, sexy sleeveless leather suit. She’s also got some hot boots to match her black gloves.

Smallville’s version of the Black Canary, played by Alaina Huffman, is a little bit more sassy. She sports a boyish haircut, making her look like a lesbian at first. However, when you look at her outfit, you can see that she sports a sexier skintight suit, with her neckline plunging down to her cleavage. Like the original Black Canary, she sports the fishnet stockings with heavy eye make-up to conceal her face.

Smallville’s Black Canary seems to be crazier and sassier when it comes to style. Viewers will have to find out if her personality matches her style, when they see her in the upcoming episode, in which she works with Lex (Michael Rosenbaum). This collaboration might mean that she’ll end up in a conflict with Chloe (Allison Mack), Lois (Erica Durance), Clark (Tom Welling), and Green Arrow. In the original comics, Black Canary initially despised Green Arrow before she fell in love with him, thus it might be a start of a love-hate relationship.

Smallville’s “Siren” airs on Thursday, February 7 at 8pm on the CW.

If you love classical music and perfect weather, don’t miss the 24th Annual Music Festival of the Canaries. The eight week long festival kicks off on January 10 and lasts through March 1, 2008. Truly a classical music lover’s dream vacation.

The Alfredo Kraus Auditorium in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will host the first of the 65 concerts on January 10, 2008. The first concert of the festival will consist of Beethoven’s Concert No. 3 for piano and orchestra, directed by Pedro Halffter and performed by the Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra with the Children’s Choir of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Gran Canaria (OFGC).

Of course the festival isn’t centralized to one island. In fact, eight of the Canary Islands will host performances during the eight week festival. The smaller islands of Lanzarote, La Palma, Fuerteventura, La Gomera and El Hierro will host twenty-two of the performances. Even La Graciosa, the smallest of the Canary Islands, will host a performance of Beethoven’s Quartets on January 12.

Performances during the 24th Annual Music Festival of the Canaries include:

* Four-time Grammy winner Cecilia Bartoli, January 31 and February 2.

* World-renowned Riccardo Muti will be conducting the London Philarmonia Orchestra in four performances, February 25 – 28.

* The Orchestra of Cadaques, led by Sir Neville Marriner with the Women’s Choir of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Gran Canaria and Ainhoa Arteta, February 27 – 29.

* The Netherlands Symphony Orchestra, directed by Yakov Kreizberg, January 17 – 20.

* The Budapest Festival Orchestra, conducted by Ivan Fischer will perform January 24 – 27.

* The Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, led by Daniel Harding, January 28 through February 2.

* The Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, directed by Sakari Oramo, February 12 – 15.

Since the mid 1960s, the Canary Islands have been a much sought-after vacation spot. Located a mere 62 miles off the African coast in the Atlantic, the islands offer beautiful volcanic scenery, beaches and many water sports. With year-round average temperatures around 70 degrees Fahrenheit, they are the perfect winter getaway.

The festival will include nearly every island from Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands to La Graciosa, the smallest island. The fourth largest island of Lanzarote, named for its red mountains, will host several of the festival’s upcoming concerts. Lanzarote is well known for its picturesque volcanic landscapes. It is perhaps also just as well known for its futuristic appearance and controlled development of wildlife and plant life.

Lanzarote is home to more than 100,000 people and has its own international airport. The island relies on tourism as well as agriculture to maintain its economy. Millions of visitors each year enjoy the black sand beaches and unique experience that only Lanzarote can offer.

The 24th Annual Music Festival of the Canaries allows Lanzarote, as well as the other Canary Islands, to showcase their beauty for classical music lovers who gather for the festival. The beautiful mountains and vast beaches are an amazing setting for such a time-honored festival.
